Can Cats Be Used to Address a Rodent Problem?

Feb 10, 2023

Cats are often seen as the ultimate pest control animals, with many believing that they can get rid of rodents and other pesky critters. But is this really the case? Is it true that cats are good at keeping rats away? The answer may surprise you.

Setting Cats Loose to Kill Rats: Is It a Really Good Idea?

The short answer is, no. While cats can be effective at controlling rodent populations, it is not recommended that you set cats loose to kill rats. Cats can be unpredictable and may not be able to target specific pests effectively.

Additionally, cats may end up killing birds, lizards, and other small animals you would not want them to kill. It is also important to consider your cat's safety, as they may be exposed to diseases, parasites, and other dangers while hunting outdoors. In some cases, cats can even become victims of other predators, such as coyotes or foxes.

How Cats Learn How to Hunt Rodents

Cats learn how to hunt rodents by watching their mother or other cats hunt. This is why it is important to ensure that cats are socialized and exposed to hunting at a young age. They may not have the skills necessary to catch and kill rodents.

Alternatives to Cats for Pest Control

If you are looking for an effective way to keep rodents away from your home, other methods may be more successful. Trapping and bait can be effective, as can natural pest control methods. Additionally, many products on the market are designed to keep rodents away that do not involve cats.

Ultrasonic devices emit sound waves that repel rodents and can be used in the home or outdoors.

Another option is using natural predators such as snakes, owls, hawks, and foxes to keep rodent populations at bay. Some people have successfully trapped mice and rats in humane traps so they can be released elsewhere, away from your property.

Another way to keep rodents away from home is by eliminating their food sources. Make sure that all your garbage and compost bins are securely covered, and any pet or bird feeders.

Additionally, ensure you seal up any cracks in walls or foundations where rodents can enter the house. If possible, trim back trees and shrubs near the perimeter of your property, so there's less cover for them to hide under.

Finally, consider using a natural rodent repellent outside your home – many products on the market contain ingredients like peppermint oil which can help deter mice and rats without harming other animals or people in the area.

The Bottomline

It is clear that cats are not the most effective solution for keeping rats away. Despite common belief, cats are not very successful in hunting rats and may even be attracted to their food sources.

Furthermore, cats may inadvertently create a hospitable environment for rats to thrive in, spreading their food around and creating a safe hiding place for rodents. For these reasons, it is important to consider other solutions when looking for an effective way to keep rats away.
