3 Clear Signs You Have a Bed Bug Infestation & What To Do

Jun 01, 2022

A bed bug infestation can cause stress and anxiety, and even serious health concerns. The best way to deal with a bed bug infestation is to be proactive. Bed bug detection is the first step in combating an infestation. Here are some of the signs that you need to watch out for.

1. Red, Itchy Spots on Your Skin

One of the common signs of a bed bug infestation is red, itchy spots on your skin. These spots can appear on your back, legs, arms, shoulder and even your face.

They can also appear in other parts of your body, including your neck, eyelids and groin.

2. Pillowcases/Sheets are Stained with Blood

Another sign you have a bed bug infestation is if your pillowcases or sheets are stained with blood. You can notice small blood spots on your pillowcases or sheets starting to appear.

Blood spots are evidence that you have started to get bites from a bed bug. If a bed bug bites you, it will secrete saliva in the wound site, causing the blood to appear.

3. You See Bed Bugs

Seeing live bed bugs in your bed or on the sheets is another sign that you have a bed bug infestation. Bed bugs are very small in size, about the size of an apple seed. These bugs are reddish-brown in colour.

Since bed bugs are so small, you may be able to see them crawling around the sheets or on the floor.

Bed bugs can also hide in any other places in your bedroom, including drawers, box springs and even behind your headboard.

What to Do with a Bed Bug Infestation

Here are some ways to help you deal with a bed bug infestation:

Conduct a Visual Inspection

First, inspect your bed. Lift your sheets and check the mattress. Look for blood stains and red, itchy spots on your skin. This can be an indication that there are bed bugs in your bed.

Inspect the Mattress and Mattress Pad

Once you have inspected your bed, check the mattress and mattress pad. Locate the mattress and mattress pad seams because bed bugs are known to hide in these seams.

Even if you cannot see any bed bugs, you will be able to see the bed bug excrement. Excretions from bed bugs are also a common sign of a bed bug infestation.

Inspect the Bed Frame

After you have inspected the mattress, inspect the bed frame and baseboard. Bed bugs can also hide in these areas as well.

Be mindful that bed bugs are very small in size, and they can hide in small cracks and crevices. You may need to use a flashlight to shine a light into these areas.

Inspect Your Nightstand

Another common place where you may find bed bugs is on the nightstand. Bed bugs can hide in the small compartments found on the nightstand.

Be sure to check out the nightstand and pay special attention to the drawer. Bed bugs can hide in the drawer, especially if the drawer is not being used.

Wash Your Bed Sheets and Pillowcases

Once you have conducted a visual inspection, the next step is to wash your sheets and pillowcases. You will also need to wash your pillows and mattress.

Get Rid of Those Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small, tough to detect, and they are known to spread quickly. It is recommended to start a bed bug detection process as soon as you have suspected that you have these bugs in your home.
