4 Things That Attract Bed Bugs to Infest Your Home

Jan 24, 2022

While you might not realise it, bed bugs are way more common than you think. These tiny critters find their way into our homes, and they don't only call the bed its home despite what the name may suggest. Regardless, bed bug infestations can cause a whole world of problems, from itchy bumps to even insomnia! As such, getting rid of them is a must if you want to enjoy a safe and comfortable home.

That said, before you call the exterminator, it helps to know what attracts them in the first place to ensure they don't infest your house again. With that in mind, here are a few things that attract bed bugs to your home:

1. Blood

While they feed on human blood, they aren't particular as to whether they feed on yours or your pets'. Unfortunately, your pets often attract the bugs. In fact, the bugs get the smell of the blood from your pets' mouths after gnawing on a wound.

That said, you can prevent the bugs from invading your house in the first place by taking your animals for regular check-ups. If found, their wounds should be treated quickly and effectively.

2. Wood

Okay, so this one isn't entirely accurate, but it is true. Bed bugs are attracted to wooden homes. This is because they can hide in the cracks and crevices of the wood, which makes it very hard for them to be exterminated.

Unfortunately, it's not always the best idea to seal off the woodwork. This is because you'll lose a lot of the aesthetic appeal of your home in the process. However, you can take preventative measures and make sure your home is bug-free before they come.

The first step is to make sure that you treat your wood with a wood preservative. This will keep the wood from swelling and give the bugs less of an opportunity to hide. You can also get rid of the bugs at the same time by repainting your house. A fresh coat of paint can help you get rid of the bugs and make your home look great at the same time!

3. Ironing Clothes

Believe it or not, ironing clothes is a huge attractant to bed bugs. It's all due to the steam that comes from the iron. You see, the bugs see the steam and mistake it for the smell of their next meal.

That said, you can prevent the bed bugs from coming into your home by throwing your wrinkled clothes in the dryer before ironing them. Dry clothes will also get rid of wrinkles, too! You might have to iron for a bit longer, but it will be worth it when you don't have to worry about a bed bug infestation!

4. Clutter

Okay, so this one might come as a surprise. However, the truth is that the more clutter you have in your home, the more likely it is that you'll have a bed bug infestation. The reason for this is that clutter gives them a place to hide.

Clutter also makes it harder for you to find them as well. As such, it's best to keep your house tidy to avoid having to contend with bed bugs.

Conclusion

There are many other things that attract bed bugs, from your food down to your dirty laundry. However, now that you know what attracts them, you can take the right precautionary actions to ensure bed bugs won't infest your home again. Sure, some things you can't truly get rid of, such as your own breath, but other things like dirty laundry can undoubtedly be dealt with. Regardless, if you are experiencing a bed bug infestation in your home, call exterminators right away to get rid of them!
